Paul Brislen & John Butt

This Hangout with Paul Brislen and John Butt was a lively discussion on telecommunications for small business with two of New Zealand’s top experts in the field. It’s an important topic – becoming more so every day – and here’s why.

Small businesses are rapidly transitioning from desktop software and back-office servers to online systems in the cloud. Similarly, many businesses are opting to move from traditional telephone systems to the more economical digital telephone systems, commonly referred to at VoIP, or Voice over IP.

But using online business systems and VoIP telephones makes your business more dependent than ever on a fast, reliable Internet connection. The network becomes a critical component of your business information system, and your Internet Service Provider becomes one of your key suppliers. For this reason it’s very important that you, as a business decision maker, become a savvy consumer of telecommunications services.

In this Hangout we’ll discuss the things you need to know about telecommunications in New Zealand with two industry experts: Paul Brislen and John Butt.

Paul Brislen is the CEO of the Telecommunications Users’ Association of NZ, a not-for-profit association that advocates on behalf of business telecommunication users ranging from local small businesses to large multinationals. Paul stepped into the role of chief executive of TUANZ in early 2011. Since then he’s battled mobile termination rates, the threat of a 10-year regulatory holiday under UFB, international mobile roaming rates and copyright legislation whilst keeping a watching brief on the UFB and RBI rollout, spectrum auctions, content debates and the ultimate aim – a faster, smarter, more connected New Zealand. A journalist by trade, past roles include head of corporate communications at Vodafone NZ as well as the editorial spot at ComputerworldNZ.

John Butt is a telecommunications consultant at TrueNet, an independent company dedicated to the accurate measurement and reporting of broadband performance. A telecommunications engineer by training, John has long been involved in broadband marketing, supply, analysis and reporting. He’s served as a marketing and engineering senior executive in both Telecom NZ and Callplus, NZ’s fourth biggest ISP.
